Key Takeaways

  • Veradermics shares are up 10% today after its oral hair-loss pill, VDPHL01, met every primary and secondary goal in its second Phase 3 trial in men.
  • Two trials with more than 1,000 men now show nearly the same result, which makes the FDA filing look much less risky.
  • In the new trial, the pill added 28.6 to 36.4 hairs per square centimeter over six months, against 6.6 for placebo, with no cardiac events of special interest.
  • The next test is 12-month safety data from the earlier trial, due later this year.

Veradermics (MANE) shares are up 10% today after its oral hair-loss pill passed its second Phase 3 trial in men.

Two for two

Before the open, Veradermics said VDPHL01, an extended-release pill version of minoxidil, met every primary and secondary endpoint in Study ‘304’, a trial in 536 men. After six months:

  • Hair count rose 28.6 hairs/cm² on the once-daily dose and 36.4 on twice-daily, against 6.6 for placebo.
  • 55.7% and 68.7% of men rated their hair “improved” or “much improved,” against 15.0% on placebo.
  • The pill separated from placebo by Month 2, the earliest check.

That’s nearly a carbon copy of April’s Study ‘302’ (30.3 and 33.0 hairs, against 7.3 for placebo). Two trials, more than 1,000 men, same result.

CEO Reid Waldman, M.D., says VDPHL01 “has the potential to transform the treatment of pattern hair loss for millions of people.”

It’s all about the heart

Minoxidil already grows hair. It’s the drug in Rogaine, and doctors prescribe generic minoxidil pills for hair loss, though none is approved for it.

The catch with the pills is the heart. By the company’s numbers, minoxidil starts acting on the heart at 10x the blood level that grows hair, and Veradermics’ slow-release version is built to stay under that line.

So far, so good: no treatment-related serious side effects and no cardiac events of special interest in ‘304’, though more than half its men had high blood pressure going in.

If approved, VDPHL01 would be the first new pill for pattern hair loss in nearly 30 years, aimed at 50 million US men. Of course, generic minoxidil is cheap, so Veradermics has to convince doctors and patients its version is worth paying up for.

Next up: the 12-month data

Veradermics expects 12-month safety data from ‘302’ later this year. That’s the readout I’m watching.

It has the money to get there. Cash hit $820 million at the end of June, after its February IPO and a May stock sale…

…against just $14.5 million of free cash flow burned in the June quarter.

Management expects that cash to last into 2030, through a potential launch. (That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if they padded the cushion again, as they did right after the ‘302’ data. Drug launches are expensive!)

My take: Two matching Phase 3s make this about as de-risked as a small biotech’s FDA filing gets, and the “potential to transform” talk looks earned. Of course, the 12-month safety data still has to hold up.
